Human sexual behavior: What is arousing and why?

Clearly, sexual motivation plays an important role in human behavior. But what, precisely, stimulates arousal? In certain respects, the same events or stimuli that produce such arousal in other species. First, direct physical contact—various forms of touching and foreplay—generates arousal. Second, human beings, like other or organisms, can be sexually aroused by certain naturally occurring odours. For example, one study found that approximately 20 percent of men appear to be sexually stimulated by the scents of copulins, chemicals found in vaginal secretions (Hassett, 1978). More recently, some scientists have reported that odorless natural substances known as pheromones can produce attraction and arousal in both men and women (Bishop, 1996; Blakeslee, 1993). On the basis of these findings, large perfume companies have added synthetic human pheromones to their products. Will wearing such perfumes make you more attractive to the opposite site sex, as advertised? That is yet to be determined, and you probably should not count on it (Cain, 1988; Ehrlichman & Bastone, 1990; Galef, 1993).

Pheromones: A Source of Sexual Attraction?
One potential source of sexual motivation, however, does seem to set human beings apart from their species: real or imagined erotic stimuli and images. Unlike other species, human beings possess the capacity to generate their own sexual arousal on the basis of erotic fantasies or daydreams (Leitenberg & Henning, 1995). And many people respond strongly to erotic materials containing either visual images or verbal descriptions of sexual behavior. As one famous researcher put it: “The mind is the only true erogenous zone.” (Byrne, 1992).

If the only effects produced by erotic materials were increases in sexual motivation and perhaps sexual behavior, there would be little reason to discuss them further. However, growing evidence suggests that exposure to such ma materials produces other effects as well.

Second, exposure to explicit erotic materials may reduce viewers’ satisfaction with their own sex life and with their current sexual partner (e.g., Zillmann & Bryant, 1988). The link between explicit pornography and sexual dissatisfaction was one point made by the film called Not a Love Story, produced by the National Film Board of Canada. The reality of the situation is that most women (and most men) do not measure up to the stan standards of eroticism set by pornographic videos, and that exposure may result in sexual dysfunction—in some men in particular.
